چکیده
Athletic conditioning is expected to increase exercise capacity through improved function of cardiopulmonary and musculoskeletal tissues. Our finding decreased calculated efficiency skeletal muscle mitochondria in one the premier mammalian athletes suggests that this mandate for may take form sacrificing maximal oxidative phosphorylation minimize exercise-induced damage caused by mitochondrial stress.

Leucine modulation of mitochondrial mass and oxygen consumption in skeletal muscle cells and adipocytes
BACKGROUND The effects of dairy on energy metabolism appear to be mediated, in part, by leucine and calcium which regulate both adipocyte and skeletal muscle energy metabolism. We recently demonstrated that leucine and calcitriol regulate fatty acid oxidation in skeletal muscle cells in vitro, with leucine promoting and calcitriol suppressing fatty acid oxidation. Moreover, leucine coordinately...
متن کاملEstimating oxygen consumption rates of arteriolar walls under physiological conditions in rat skeletal muscle.
To examine the effects of vascular tone reduction on O2 consumption of the vascular wall, we determined the O2 consumption rates of arteriolar walls under normal conditions and during vasodilation induced by topical application of papaverine. A phosphorescence quenching technique was used to quantify intra- and perivascular PO2 in rat cremaster arterioles with different branching orders. Then, ...
متن کاملIncreasing effect of caffeine on the oxygen consumption of the skeletal muscle.
In 1937, SASLOW1) reported that the oxygen consumption of the skeletal muscle was increased by subcontracture dose of caffeine. AXELSON2) observed the mechanical change of skeletal muscle induced by caffeine and pointed out the fact that caffeine was a useful agent for the analysis of excitation-contraction coupling mechanism. He found that caffeine was also able to induce the contracture in th...
متن کامل1α,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 Regulates Mitochondrial Oxygen Consumption and Dynamics in Human Skeletal Muscle Cells.
Muscle weakness and myopathy are observed in vitamin D deficiency and chronic renal failure, where concentrations of the active vitamin D3 metabolite, 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1α,25(OH)2D3), are low. To evaluate the mechanism of action of 1α,25(OH)2D3 in skeletal muscle, we examined mitochondrial oxygen consumption, dynamics, and biogenesis and changes in expression of nuclear genes encoding ...
متن کاملEffect of dietary protein on calpastatin in canine skeletal muscle.
The cysteine proteinases, mu- and m-calpain, along with their inhibitor, calpastatin, have been hypothesized to play a role in skeletal muscle protein degradation. Because nutrition has previously been shown to influence the expression of calpastatin, the working hypothesis of this study was that the quantity and source of dietary protein could influence regulation of the calpain system in musc...
